Our Reception classes utilise the Australian Early Years Learning Framework.
The early years framework is a tool used to extend and enrich children’s learning with an emphasis on communication and language (including early literacy and numeracy) as well as social and emotional development.
Approaches to Learning
Play Based Learning
Our Reception team is committed to ensuring our students are provided with a wide range of opportunities to learn through play-based experiences. We know that young children learn best when they are given time and space to explore their ideas about the world and to make meaning of these ideas through play. Teachers are able to plan play experiences that invite children to explore, extend and enhance their learning interests, and introduce experiences that offer provocations to new ways of thinking, doing and being. Play is vital to all areas of development and we see it as a foundational aspect of our programme. Students learn about themselves, other people and the worlds around them, within play environments where they are inspired to discover, create and learn together.
Social and Emotional Learning
We value the social context in which learning occurs and emphasise the importance of relationships and belonging. At this stage of development, students are becoming increasingly aware of the ways in which they can work with others as well as developing the ability to reflect on their own actions and contributions to their worlds. Through our play-based approach, students are nurtured in their confidence and resilience, navigating their emotions and forming strong, respectful relationships, laying the foundation for lifelong social skills and emotional well-being.
Key Learning Areas
In the Early Years the emphasis is placed mainly on exploring, investigating and discovering in the key learning areas. A variety of teaching approaches are used to suit the needs of the children. Class, group and individual learning activities are used to encourage development in all areas.
